How to become a Buddhist?

Anyone can become a Buddhist. One need not be "born" into Buddhism or need to have parents who are Buddhists. It can be of any race, country of origin, social and economic background or gender at any time.

People who want to identify themselves as Buddhists typically participate in a ceremony called "The Refuge into the three jewels" (Triple gem).

This is a simple act which includes the recitation of verses refuge three times before a monk or nun. The refuge verses express one's faith in the Buddha (Enlightenment), Dharma (faith) and Sangha (congregation) in order to escape suffering and attain enlightenment.

By accepting the three jewels arrangement (Triple Gem) way you will also lay a promise to follow the five intentions or rules:

  • To refrain from killing
  • Refraining from taking what is not given
  • Refraining from sexual abuse
  • Not to lie
  • Not to poison themselves
